Vascular Screening

vascular screening at Premier Vein & Pain Center Loveland, Fort Collins, Northern ColoradoThe vascular system is made up of veins and arteries that allows blood to flow to vital organs in the human body. A healthy vascular system keeps blood flowing freely, and vascular screening can help identify potentially serious problems – problems that may have no symptoms – so they can be treated. Learn more about arterial insufficiency and how we perform vascular screening.

Vascular screening for specific conditions that Premier Vein and Pain Center conducts include:

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)

An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a bulging that develops in a weakened area in the largest artery in the abdomen. As the heart beats and puts pressure on this weak spot, it continues to grow. Eventually, the area becomes so large and the wall so weak and thin that it ruptures, causing massive internal bleeding. This is a situation that is usually fatal. The ultrasound vascular screening provided by Premier Vein and Pain Center can usually identify an AAA so it can be safely treated.

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

Peripheral artery disease, also called leg artery disease, occurs when the arteries in the legs become blocked, leaving the legs with not enough blood or oxygen. As people age, their arteries can become blocked and hardened as a result of plaque build up, also called atherosclerosis. As more and more plaque builds up inside the arteries, less and less blood can flow through. We can perform a number of different tests to check for PAD and its extent in order to develop the best treatment plan for you.

Carotid Artery Disease

Carotid artery disease occurs when one or both of the two main arteries that carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the brain develop plaque along their interior walls. This condition can limit blood flow to the brain, as well as pose an increased risk for stroke as a result of plaque breaking free and traveling to the smaller arteries in the brain. During carotid artery screening, we use ultrasound to measure the amount and speed of the blood flow in the carotid arteries, as well as check for any obstruction from plaque on the artery walls.
